Developed by the German studio Keen Games, the voxel-based survival action RPG Enshrouded has steadily grown into an undeniable force within the survival-crafting genre since its Early Access launch. Supporting up to 16 players in online co-op, the game casts players as a Flameborn, a child of the flame navigating the ruined kingdom of Embervale, fighting back the deadly Shroud, rescuing NPC craftspeople, building a base, and venturing ever deeper into the fog. A recent update raised the maximum Flame Altar level to 9 and introduced an animal taming system alongside new enemy types. The following guide provides a complete early-to-mid-game progression strategy, covering Shroud survival rules, the Flame Altar upgrade path, and skill specialisation.

Shroud Survival Rules: Blue Is Safe, Red Means Retreat
The most iconic mechanic of Enshrouded is the Shroud that blankets the world. Upon entering a Shrouded area, a countdown timer appears at the top of the screen. When the timer reaches zero, the Shroud consumes your character, resulting in death. The Shroud is divided into two levels: Deadly Shroud, which slowly drains the countdown and can be managed with basic Flame Altar upgrades in the early game, and the far more dangerous red-hued areas, which drain the timer almost instantly. Entering the latter without sufficient Flame Altar strength is effectively suicide.
For new players, the most important survival rule is simple: do not step into any red Shroud zones before Level 15. Once the Flame Altar reaches the appropriate level, these red zones will downgrade to blue, making them safe to explore.
Scattered throughout Shrouded areas are special nodes known as Shroud Roots or Elixir Wells. Destroying them with an axe grants skill points and temporarily clears the Shroud from a radius around the node. Whenever you enter a new Shrouded area, your first priority should always be to locate and destroy Shroud Roots — this is one of the primary sources of skill points and, more importantly, it carves out a temporary safe buffer zone for combat and resource gathering.
Stamina management is more critical in the Shroud than in any other scenario. Depleting your stamina while dodging inside the Shroud causes a brief stun, meaning you must always keep a stamina reserve during evasive manoeuvres. It is advisable to raise your stamina to a level where you can perform at least four consecutive dodges before entering the Shroud, and to keep a constant eye on the stamina bar to avoid bottoming out.
Beyond upgrading the Flame Altar, specific skills, potions, and Shroud beacons can also extend the Shroud timer. In the early game, prioritise unlocking skill nodes that increase the maximum Shroud timer, as this significantly reduces the frequency of corpse runs during extended exploration sessions.
The Flame Altar: The Engine of All Progression
The core gameplay loop of Enshrouded is clear: explore Shrouded areas → collect materials → upgrade the Flame Altar → push deeper into more dangerous zones. The Flame Altar is the foundational engine driving all progress in the game. It defines your base territory, serves simultaneously as a fast-travel node and respawn point, and determines how long you can survive within the Shroud. In other words, strengthening the Flame Altar should be your most important early priority — ahead of weapon farming and ahead of base aesthetics.
Upgrading the Flame Altar requires specific rare materials, which are typically located in the deepest zones your current Flame Altar level can support. Do not attempt to skip ahead to farm materials beyond your means — rather than dying repeatedly in red Shroud zones and losing resources, it is far more efficient to maximise your gathering within the currently safe blue zones.
Once the Flame reaches a certain level, you can place multiple Flame Altars. This means your starting base is, in essence, replaceable. Do not over-invest in decorating and expanding the very first base location. Treat it as an outpost, and as the main quest progresses and the map opens up, establishing a new base closer to mid-to-late-game resource nodes will prove far more efficient.
The fast-travel system operates through Flame Altars and Ancient Spires. Ancient Spires are scattered across each region; you must climb to the top and complete a brief puzzle to activate them. Once activated, you can freely teleport between any activated Spire and your Flame Altars. When exploring a new region, prioritising the location and activation of the Spire will drastically reduce subsequent travel time.

Skill Specialisation and the Most Efficient Build Paths
Enshrouded‘s skill system spans multiple playstyle directions, including Warrior, Mage, Ranger, and Assassin, and players can freely combine skills from different branches to craft unique builds. However, with skill points being extremely limited in the early game, it is strongly recommended to focus on a single direction rather than spreading points evenly.
Among the many available builds, the two-handed sword Whirlwind build is widely recognised by the player community as one of the most efficient choices for early progression. The core idea of this build is to leverage the area-of-effect advantage of two-handed swords, combined with the Whirlwind skill, to efficiently clear groups of enemies. The reach and area damage of a two-handed sword mean you do not need to deal with multiple enemies one by one — a single charged Whirlwind can eliminate an entire wave of mobs.
In terms of skill point acquisition, aside from the points granted by levelling up, Shroud Roots are the primary source of skill points. Whenever you enter a new Shrouded area, destroy every visible Shroud Root as a priority. This not only directly increases your combat power but also clears out safe exploration zones.
Recommended must-have skills for the early game include: Double Jump (improves mobility during exploration and combat), Glider Stamina Reduction (reduces stamina consumption while gliding), and Shroud Timer Extension (increases survival time within the Shroud). These three skills are universally applicable across all builds, and regardless of which weapon you choose as your primary, they will provide substantial help in both exploration and survival. As the game progresses, after reaching the level cap and clearing all Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells, you can acquire up to 184 skill points, providing enough resources to unlock more advanced skill nodes.
Craftspeople Rescue and Base Building
Multiple NPC craftspeople are scattered across Ancient Vaults throughout the world. Rescuing them unlocks advanced crafting stations. The Blacksmith, Carpenter, Alchemist, and other craftspeople serve as core nodes for equipment upgrades and material refinement. When entering a new region, rescuing craftspeople carries the same priority as activating Ancient Spires — without advanced crafting stations, even if you collect rare materials, they cannot be converted into combat power.
For base building, it is recommended to arrange crafting stations in functional zones during the early game: a Smithing Zone for the Furnace and Weapon Crafting Table, an Alchemy Zone for the Potion Table and Enchanting Table, and a Crafting Zone for the Woodworking Table and Loom. Zoning not only makes management easier but also allows for quick location of needed stations when expanding the base later on.
