”Life Is Strange: True Colors“

Developed by Deck Nine Games and published by Square Enix, the narrative adventure game Life Is Strange: True Colors launched in September 2021 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Unlike previous entries in the series, this title was not released episodically but rather as a complete, full game with all five chapters available at once. The protagonist, Alex Chen, is a young woman with a supernatural form of Empathy. After spending her childhood in the foster care system, she arrives in the small Colorado town of Haven Springs to reunite with her brother, Gabe, whom she has not seen for years. However, a sudden tragedy shatters her life once more. Gabe dies in a mysterious accident, and Alex must use her ability to perceive the emotions of others, and even read fragments of their memories, to uncover the truth behind her brother’s death.

The Empathy System: The Core Mechanic Driving the Narrative

Alex’s supernatural ability is not a combat skill, but Empathy. She can see emotional auras radiating from other people, perceiving their most intense emotional states. These auras are colour-coded: red represents anger, blue represents sadness, yellow represents fear, and purple represents joy or love. When Alex draws near to someone experiencing overwhelming emotions, the surrounding visuals and soundscape shift in response. The world may suddenly darken into a desaturated, cold palette, with the background filled by unsettling low-frequency noise, or it may brighten instantly, with sunlight flooding through every window.

In certain key scenes, Alex can actively delve deeper and read a person’s memory shards. These shards manifest within the environment as interactive, ghostly apparitions. Approaching a shard allows you to see that person’s true feelings and internal monologue at the moment a specific event occurred. Memory shards are the core source of clues for revealing the truth about Gabe’s death. During the bar scene in Chapter 1, the mines in Chapter 2, and the quarry in Chapter 4, these shards are scattered throughout the environment. Collecting all of them is a prerequisite for understanding the full picture of what truly happened.

Another critical application of the Empathy ability is emotional transference. When Alex absorbs excessively intense negative emotions from someone, these feelings accumulate inside her until they reach a critical threshold. If not released, she risks losing control. The way to release this build-up is to find destructible objects in the environment — windows, tables, old televisions — and destroy them to vent the pent-up emotional pressure. This mechanic also carries significant narrative weight, as it allows the player to viscerally experience Alex’s helplessness in being overwhelmed by the emotions of others, rather than simply observing her power from a detached perspective.

Character Bonds and Branching Consequences

The residents of Haven Springs are the core narrative assets of Life Is Strange: True Colors. The primary characters include Alex’s brother Gabe Chen, the flower shop owner Eleanor, the bar owner Jed, the park ranger Ryan, and Charlotte, the heir to the local mining company. Each character possesses their own side story and emotional burdens. Whether Alex actively seeks to understand these stories, and whether she extends a helping hand when they need it, directly influences the direction of the main storyline and the final ending.

Ryan and Charlotte represent the two most significant relationship paths. Ryan is Gabe’s best friend and the only person present at the scene when the accident occurred. Throughout the entire game, Alex’s attitude toward Ryan — whether she chooses to trust or suspect him — remains a persistent thread. Charlotte’s father owns the local mining company, and her family has deep-rooted economic ties to every household in the town. When Gabe’s death becomes entangled with the mining company’s safety record, Charlotte is forced to choose between loyalty to her family and the pursuit of the truth.

The game’s key branching points are usually not presented as a simple binary dialogue choice, but are instead hidden within whether or not Alex completes a specific character’s side content. For example, during a pivotal council debate scene in Chapter 4, Alex must convince the town council to investigate the mining company’s safety record. The number of arguments you can use during this debate, and their persuasive power, depends entirely on how many deep relationships you have forged with the townspeople throughout the first three chapters.

Chapter Progression and Ending Conditions

Chapter 1, “Side A,” serves as a prologue, primarily establishing the character relationships and introducing the Empathy system. Gabe’s death occurs at the very end of the chapter and serves as the inciting incident that drives all subsequent events. Chapter 2, “Lanterns,” focuses on the investigation phase following the funeral, as Alex begins gathering clues and speaking to each townsperson in turn. Chapter 3, “Monster Story,” weaves the collected clues together, pointing toward the mining company’s suspicious safety record. Chapter 4, “Flickering Lights,” is the climax of the game. At the quarry, Alex reads the memory shard of the exact moment of Gabe’s death, and the truth is fully exposed. Chapter 5, “Side B,” is the concluding chapter, where Alex faces her final choice.

The game features several ending variations, determined by two core factors. The first is whether Alex successfully persuades enough residents to support an investigation during the town council debate in Chapter 4. Success means the mining company’s safety violations are exposed to the public; failure means the truth is suppressed. The second factor is Alex’s final stance toward Ryan and Charlotte in the last chapter. She can choose to stay in Haven Springs, leave town together with someone, or set out on a new journey alone. The specific combination of the ending depends on all the accumulated relationship values and key choices made across the entire playthrough. The people you helped will speak up for you during the final confrontation. The people you neglected will remain silent, and their silence may be the final straw that buries the truth.
