On June 3, 2026, at 9:00 AM Beijing time, Sony held its first summer State of Play digital showcase as scheduled. The event ran for approximately 45 minutes and featured a total of 14 games, spanning first-party exclusives, third-party partner titles, and new content for PlayStation VR2. From the opening segment to the final reveal, the pacing was tight and the information density was high, leading multiple outlets to describe it as “the most content-rich State of Play in the past two years.”
Marvel’s Wolverine Gameplay Debut
The show’s climactic finale was, as widely expected, handed to Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine. This marked the first time a full gameplay demonstration had been shown to the public since the title was originally announced in 2023. The six-minute segment showcased Wolverine tracking a target through the fictional city of Madripoor. In the gameplay footage, Wolverine’s claws are used as climbing tools, embedding into building facades for vertical traversal. The combat system blends melee claw strikes, environmental executions, and a “Berserker Mode” — a special state that dramatically boosts damage output and healing for a short duration. Insomniac Creative Director Brian Horton confirmed after the demonstration that the game will “fully leverage the hardware capabilities of the PS5 Pro,” offering two visual options: a Performance Mode targeting 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, and a Fidelity Mode with ray tracing at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second. The release window is set for early 2027, though a specific date has yet to be announced.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Release Date Confirmed
Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding 2: On the Beach opened the show with a brand-new story trailer, depicting a confrontation between protagonist Sam Porter Bridges and Higgs on the Beach. The end of the trailer confirmed an official release date of October 24, 2026, launching simultaneously on PS5 and PC, with pre-orders opening immediately. Hideo Kojima confirmed via social media following the event that a PS5 Pro enhancement patch will be available on day one, supporting higher-resolution output and a stable 60 frames per second performance. Regarding the PC launch, Kojima Productions stated that it is currently confirmed only for a simultaneous release on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
New First-Party Titles Announced
Two previously unannounced first-party titles were unexpectedly revealed during the showcase. Bend Studio officially unveiled its upcoming open-world action game, Lone Wolf. The trailer depicted a lone survivor moving through the dense forests and snowy mountains of the Pacific Northwest. The overall tone is a clear departure from the studio’s previous work, Days Gone, leaning more toward survival stealth and grounded combat. Bend Studio stated in an official blog post that Lone Wolf is a brand-new intellectual property with no connection to the world of Days Gone. The project is currently in full development and is expected to launch in the second half of 2027.
The other new title is Sucker Punch Productions’ follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, titled Ghost of Tsushima: Shadows Beyond. The trailer indicated that the story takes place decades after the events of the original game and stars a female samurai searching for a lost samurai lineage during the turbulent Sengoku period of Japan. The visuals retain the iconic black-and-white “Kurosawa Mode” filter from the first game and introduce dynamic weather effects that influence combat — heavy rain loosens bowstrings, reducing arrow power, while snow slows movement but allows characters to leave footprints that can be used to track enemies. The release window is tentatively set for 2027.
New PS VR2 Content
PlayStation VR2 received a dedicated segment during the presentation. Capcom formally unveiled the trailer for the VR Mode of Resident Evil 9: Requiem, confirming that it will launch on October 31, 2026, alongside the “Scar of Shadows” DLC. Players who already own Resident Evil 9 will be able to download the VR Mode at no extra cost. Additionally, a brand-new original VR action game titled Shattered Dimensions was revealed for the first time. It utilizes the haptic feedback of the PS VR2 Sense controllers to simulate the weight and recoil of different weapons and is scheduled for release in winter 2026.
Indie Game Highlights
In the indie game category, two titles with sharply contrasting styles generated the most discussion among both the live audience and the online community. Paper Plane, a hand-drawn animated narrative game developed by a two-person team, tells the story of a young girl who communicates with another version of herself in a parallel world through paper planes. It is expected to launch in autumn 2026. The other title is a Metroidvania action game called Song of Iron, set in a Bronze Age Eastern civilization. The protagonist wields a massive bronze shield that serves as both a defensive tool and an offensive weapon. The shield can be thrown, used to deflect projectiles, and employed to trigger environmental traps for executions. A release date has not yet been announced.
