On June 24, 2026, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco jointly announced that Elden Ring has officially surpassed 30 million units in cumulative global sales across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. This milestone arrives more than four years after the game’s initial launch in February 2022, and represents an increase of five million copies since the last official sales update of 25 million units in June 2024. The figure not only cements Elden Ring as the single best-selling title in FromSoftware’s history, but also places it among the top-selling video games of all time, in the same tier as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
In its official statement, Bandai Namco attributed the game’s sustained long-term sales to three primary factors. First, the release of the major expansion Shadow of the Erdtree in June 2024 drove a fresh wave of new players and returning veterans. That DLC alone surpassed 10 million units sold within two months of its launch. Second, the release of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition in May 2026 — a complete bundle of the base game and the expansion, with additional exclusive content including new weapons, new starting classes, and Torrent armor skins — successfully activated a previously untapped player base on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. Third, a consistent discount strategy combined with strong word-of-mouth has kept the game’s reputation robust. On Steam, Elden Ring still holds an overall rating of “Very Positive,” with positive reviews accounting for 93% of more than 800,000 user reviews.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the Tarnished Edition deserves particular attention. FromSoftware had previously delayed the Tarnished Edition from 2025 to 2026 due to performance optimization challenges on the new hardware, a decision that initially sparked concern among the player community. The port ultimately earned recognition for its stable quality upon release. According to a technical analysis published by Digital Foundry in early June 2026, the Switch 2 version of Elden Ring runs at a dynamic resolution of 720p to 900p in handheld mode and 1080p to 1440p in docked mode, with the frame rate holding steady at 30 frames per second in the vast majority of scenarios, and some indoor areas reaching an unlocked 60 frames per second. While this performance falls short of the PS5 and high-end PC experience, it represents an acceptable standard for a hybrid handheld/home console and has successfully brought the Lands Between to a large audience that was previously unable to access the game due to hardware limitations.
In the 30-million-sales announcement, Bandai Namco did not reveal any new DLC or sequel plans. However, FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa Corporation, had already stated in its financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2026 that the “further expansion” of the Elden Ring IP is a key component of the company’s mid-term strategy. Known projects currently in development at FromSoftware include the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods, developed in collaboration with Sony; unspecified new content for the Elden Ring base game; and several yet-to-be-announced internal projects. Industry analysts widely predict that once FromSoftware completes its current slate, the studio will turn its attention toward a full sequel to Elden Ring, though such a project is unlikely to arrive before 2028 at the earliest.
The 30-million sales figure for Elden Ring also carries symbolic weight for the open-world action RPG genre as a whole. Over the past decade, the only other titles in the genre to reach this sales tier have been The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Compared to those three, Elden Ring took a fundamentally different approach to narrative structure, player guidance, and difficulty design — it offers virtually no quest log, no explicit directional markers, and no concessions to lower the barrier of combat difficulty. That such a deliberately unconventional design achieved this level of commercial success has unquestionably exerted a deep and lasting influence on product design philosophies across the entire industry.
