FromSoftware Unveils The Duskbloods Gameplay Demo: Switch 2 Exclusive Confirmed for Early 2027

On July 2, 2026, FromSoftware and Nintendo jointly hosted the first standalone presentation for The Duskbloods. The Switch 2 exclusive, which had remained silent since its initial announcement in April 2025, finally made its formal debut with an eight-minute gameplay demonstration. The presentation also confirmed a release date of January 29, 2027, with pre-orders opening immediately.

The setting of The Duskbloods is markedly different from any previous FromSoftware title. The game takes place in a Gothic metropolis known as the Duskblood City, where players assume the role of a hunter called a “Bloodsworn,” tracking and slaying fallen vampire nobles in a city shrouded in perpetual night. Based on the gameplay demo, the visual style fuses Victorian-era architectural aesthetics with FromSoftware’s signature dark fantasy atmosphere — streets are lit by gas lamps, spired cathedrals cast twisted shadows under a blood-red moon, and beneath the city lie labyrinthine catacombs built by an ancient vampire bloodline.

The combat system was the centrepiece of the presentation. Unlike the shield-based defence of the Dark Souls series or the deflection rhythm of Sekiro: Shadows Die TwiceThe Duskbloods introduces a unique mechanic called “Blood Retaliation.” During combat, the player character continuously accumulates a “Blood Fury” gauge, which fills faster when taking damage. Once the gauge is full, the character can activate a burst state in which all attacks gain a life-steal effect and movement speed and attack range are significantly increased. However, the burst state has a limited duration, and when it expires, the character briefly enters a weakened state during which they take additional damage. This high-risk, high-reward design forces players to constantly make judgment calls in combat — whether to activate Blood Fury now to end the fight quickly, or to reserve it for a more dangerous phase as a survival tool.

The weapon system likewise displays FromSoftware’s characteristic depth. The demo showcased three primary weapon types: the Blood Blade, a transforming one-handed weapon that can switch between sword, whip, and claw forms; the Dusk Scythe, a heavy two-handed weapon with wide reach but slow speed, whose charged attack unleashes a crimson arc-shaped shockwave; and the Silver Pistol, an off-hand weapon with modest damage that can interrupt enemy spellcasting and lunging attacks. The three weapon types can be freely combined, and different primary and off-hand pairings produce different combat art effects.

At the conclusion of the presentation, FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed via a brief video message that The Duskbloods has been in development for over three years with his own deep personal involvement. He stated that the game would “explore narrative territory that FromSoftware has yet to touch upon,” and specifically noted that the Switch 2 exclusivity partnership gave the team the opportunity to “build an experience from the ground up for a specific piece of hardware.” Regarding game length, he revealed that the main story is expected to take approximately 30 to 35 hours to complete, with a substantial volume of side quests and hidden bosses available for deeper exploration.
