Outside of the Xbox Games Showcase, Capcom held an official livestream on June 5, 2026, to reveal the specifics of the first major story DLC for Resident Evil 9: Requiem. The DLC is titled “Scar of Shadows” and is scheduled for release on October 31, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. During the same livestream, Capcom also confirmed that the DLC will launch alongside a VR mode supporting PlayStation VR2, allowing players to experience all three chapters of the DLC from a first-person perspective — marking the first time a mainline Resident Evil title has natively supported VR at launch.
“Scar of Shadows” will contain three new story chapters, with the core narrative set one year after the events of the main game. The first chapter, “Embers,” focuses on Jill Valentine, marking her return as a protagonist in the main storyline for the first time since Resident Evil 5. Jill receives intelligence that there are still survivors inside an abandoned BSAA research facility. As she delves deeper, she discovers that the facility was conducting human experiments with a new type of virus, and the test subjects have broken loose. The second chapter, “Undercurrents,” is led by Leon S. Kennedy, who goes deep into the South American black market to trace the source of a new bio-weapon. The setting stretches from crowded street markets to an abandoned bio-lab hidden deep within the jungle. The third chapter, “Sacrifice,” shifts perspective to a supporting character who appeared only through audio files in the main storyline — a nurse named Elena Vazquez, who was trapped in a hospital during a viral outbreak. Players will experience how she, with no combat training whatsoever, navigates through infected zones in search of her daughter. This character had previously appeared across several scattered audio logs in the base game of Resident Evil 9, recounting her experiences moving survivors between different hospital departments. Her story sparked extensive discussion within the community, with many players speculating that she had perished. Capcom has clearly chosen a more narratively ambitious route to continue her fate.
During the livestream, Capcom’s development team made it clear that the design of the third chapter was heavily influenced by the Resident Evil 2 remake. Unlike the chapters featuring Jill and Leon, where the player has ample firepower, the nurse’s chapter emphasizes resource scarcity. Ammunition is extremely limited throughout the entire chapter, and for most of it, players must rely on stealth and environmental objects to evade monsters. The hospital’s design makes extensive use of ventilation shafts, lockers, and movable hospital beds to create hiding spaces. It also introduces a new mechanic: players can use medical supplies such as bandages and disinfectants to temporarily reinforce a door, slowing down the pursuit of the infected. However, once these supplies are used, they cannot be replenished. The development team specifically mentioned that one of the inspirations for this chapter was 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, particularly the early survival-horror experience within the Baker mansion. One developer stated during the stream, “We wanted to remind players that the core of Resident Evil, for a very long time, was not about shooting — it was about fear.”
Alongside the new story, the DLC will also add a new unlockable weapon and two new enemy types. The weapon is a modified Silver Ghost pistol, equipped with a suppressor and a laser sight, which can be unlocked for use in the main campaign after meeting specific conditions. The two new enemies are the Crawler and the Whisperer. The Crawler is a mutant capable of rapidly scaling walls and ceilings, diving at the player from above and forcing them to look up and fight, breaking the design convention of the main game where most threats came from the same horizontal plane. The Whisperer is an enemy that continuously emits a low-frequency hiss when nearby. Its sound waves cause the player’s vision to blur slightly, making it difficult to pinpoint its exact location during chaotic fights and forcing players to rely on their mini-map to get their bearings.
Resident Evil 9: Requiem launched in October 2025 and sold over 12 million copies in its first month, maintaining a 93% positive rating on Steam and a Metacritic average score of 88. The game was considered a strong contender for Game of the Year by multiple outlets. While it ultimately did not take home the top prize at The Game Awards, it won awards for Best Action/Adventure Game and Best Narrative. In the same week that “Scar of Shadows” was announced, the Resident Evil franchise officially surpassed 200 million units in cumulative global sales, a milestone Capcom celebrated with a limited-time promotional sale.
At the very end of the livestream, Capcom capped the presentation with a 30-second teaser trailer officially announcing the highly anticipated Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake, confirming a 2027 release window for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The teaser featured the iconic scene of Alexia Ashford awakening from her cryogenic chamber, with Alfred Ashford’s voice running throughout as a background monologue. This will be the fifth remake since the Resident Evil 2 remake kicked off the series in 2019, and it is the one most passionately demanded by the fanbase. Capcom stated that more details on the remake will be revealed in early 2027, and that the project is now in full development.
