Released in early 2023 by EA Motive, the Dead Space remake uses the Frostbite Engine to completely rebuild Visceral Games’ classic 2008 survival horror title. Players step into the engineering boots of Isaac Clarke, who boards the silent mining vessel USG Ishimura in search of his girlfriend, Nicole, only to be confronted by horrific creatures known as Necromorphs. The remake preserves the original’s defining design philosophy — dismemberment is the only effective method of killing — while fully overhauling the visuals, audio, and delivering a seamless, interconnected ship experience free of loading screens.

Core Combat: Aim for Limbs, Forget Headshots
The most subversive design choice in Dead Space, one that defies the instincts honed by traditional shooters, is that shooting for the head is not only useless — it can be actively harmful. Necromorphs do not stop when decapitated; instead, they enter a frenzied state with heightened aggression and movement speed. The correct approach is to aim for limbs and joints. Sever the legs first to rob the creature of mobility, then sever the arms to eliminate its means of attack. For a basic Slasher, two to three shots from the Plasma Cutter to the legs will bring it down, followed by an arm shot to fully neutralise the threat.
This logic governs every combat encounter throughout the game. You will use the Plasma Cutter’s horizontal firing mode to slice off legs and its vertical mode to sever arms. The Plasma Cutter’s ability to toggle between horizontal and vertical firing is explained early in the game but is easily overlooked. In truth, it is your most essential operational skill. Develop a habit: before every fight, check whether your current weapon is set to horizontal or vertical fire. Use horizontal mode to cut the legs of charging enemies and vertical mode to sever the projectile-launching organs of ranged attackers.
Weapon Selection: You Do Not Need to Upgrade Everything
Seven weapons can be found across the Ishimura, but it is neither possible nor necessary to upgrade all of them. The Plasma Cutter is the most reliable primary weapon. Its ammunition is plentiful, its rate of fire is steady, and its ability to switch between horizontal and vertical fire remains relevant from the opening chapter to the end credits. The Pulse Rifle is suited for thinning out groups and dealing with specific pregnant-type enemies; its secondary fire, the Proximity Mine, can be deployed to secure narrow corridors. The Force Gun is a close-quarters escape tool. Its primary fire pushes back surrounding enemies, while its secondary fire creates a gravity well that suspends and tears apart enemies caught within it, making it devastating against swarms of small Necromorphs.
The remaining weapons — the Flamethrower, the Contact Beam, the Line Gun, and the Force Gun’s variants — can serve as situational tools, but you should refrain from investing Power Nodes into them. Power Nodes are among the most scarce resources in the game. It is recommended to channel roughly 80% of all acquired Nodes into the Plasma Cutter, prioritising upgrades to damage and reload speed, followed by magazine capacity. The Rig’s hit point and oxygen upgrades also require Nodes, but weapon damage should take precedence over health — the faster you can eliminate threats, the less health you will need.
Stasis and Kinesis: Your Two Pillars of Survival
Beyond his weaponry, Isaac possesses two utility abilities that fundamentally alter the dynamics of combat. The Stasis Module can slow an individual enemy or obstacle to a crawl. Halting a fast-moving Slasher with Stasis and then methodically dismembering it is the most efficient method of dealing with elite foes. Stasis energy can be replenished for free at dedicated recharge stations found throughout the map, and Stasis Packs can be purchased at the Store. Do not be reluctant to use it.
The Kinesis Module allows Isaac to grab and hurl objects. Many combat chambers are littered with sharp metal pipes, severed Necromorph claws, and explosive canisters. Using Kinesis to launch these objects at enemies deals damage and, crucially, conserves ammunition. Particularly during the early game when ammo is scarce, Kinesis-thrown projectiles are your most reliable means of zero-cost damage output. An advanced technique involves first severing an enemy’s arm, then using Kinesis to grab the razor-sharp claw that drops to the floor and hurling it back at the creature. A Necromorph’s own severed limb is simply free ammunition.
Resource Management and Store Strategy
Resource management in Dead Space is not merely about shot accuracy; it is about mindset. The game dynamically adjusts item drops based on your current condition. When you are low on ammunition, enemies and containers are more likely to yield it. When your health is low, health packs become more common. However, this system should not be interpreted as an encouragement to scrape by in a permanent state of scarcity, because the dynamic adjustment has an upper limit. A more rational approach is to maintain balance across all resources. Do not hoard an excessive amount of one ammo type while lacking another, and do not spend all your Credits on health packs.
At the Store, prioritise purchasing Plasma Cutter ammunition and Stasis Packs. If a Power Node appears at a discounted price, buy it without hesitation. Never purchase weapons from the Store — every weapon in the game can be found for free during the course of the campaign. Save your Credits for scarcer resources. Additionally, before concluding each chapter, review your inventory. If any single resource type fills more than three slots, consider selling a portion to free up Credits for the next chapter’s operational supplies.

Environmental Awareness and the Vent Rule
The USG Ishimura is a single, seamless environment with no loading screens and, critically, no safe zones. You can be attacked at any time, from any direction. Cultivate “vent awareness”: every time you pass a vent on the ceiling or wall, glance at its state. If the vent cover has been torn open, Necromorphs are active in the vicinity. If you hear crawling sounds echoing through the metal ductwork, stop immediately, stand still, and determine the direction of the sound. Enemies are most likely to burst from a vent behind or beside you.
Before a boss encounter, there is typically a Save Station and a Store. Use these to top up your supplies and upgrade your equipment. One final warning: do not open your inventory or map during combat. The game does not pause, and you remain fully vulnerable while browsing menus. If you need to switch weapons or use a health pack, first ensure the immediate area is clear, or use Stasis to temporarily freeze the current threat before taking any action. This is a lesson countless new players have learned the hard way, paying with their lives in the most avoidable of circumstances.
