Developed by the Swedish studio Stunlock Studios, the vampire survival action RPG V Rising has continuously expanded its content since its Early Access launch and has since become one of the largest player-base titles within the vampire survival genre. Players take on the role of a newly awakened vampire, building a castle, hunting V Blood carriers, and conquering territory across the continent of Vardoran. The game’s signature feature is the V Blood tracking system — defeating specific bosses allows you to absorb their blood, unlocking entirely new vampire abilities, crafting recipes, and castle upgrade options. The following guide provides a complete progression from beginner to endgame, covering the Blood Type system, an early-game boss kill order, and final build crafting.
The Blood Type System: Quality Matters More Than Type
The Blood Type system in V Rising serves as the foundational underpinning of your character’s entire combat effectiveness. Five spell schools exist in the game — Blood, Unholy, Illusion, Chaos, and Frost — and you can freely combine skills from different schools to construct your own playstyle. However, the influence of Blood Type is even more fundamental. When you feed on an enemy, you acquire their Blood Type and Blood Quality percentage.
Blood Types in the game include Creature, Warrior, Worker, Brute, Scholar, and others, each providing different passive bonuses. For example, Warrior blood boosts physical damage and weapon skill cooldown speed, Scholar blood reduces spell costs and provides spell lifesteal, and Worker blood increases resource gathering efficiency.
The most common mistake new players make is to look only at the Blood Type and ignore the Blood Quality percentage. In practice, the stat bonuses provided by a high Blood Quality percentage far outweigh the differences between Blood Types. A 90% Blood Quality Worker blood will often outperform a 30% Blood Quality Warrior blood in combat. It is advisable to develop the habit of constantly replenishing high-quality blood during the early game, rather than waiting until your health pool is depleted before hastily feeding on any nearby creature.
One crucial reminder: you are a vampire, and sunlight is your mortal enemy. In-game daytime lasts from 10 AM to 6 PM, while nighttime spans from 7 PM to 9 AM the following morning. Exposure to sunlight causes continuous health loss, and with weak early-game equipment, the midday sun can kill you within seconds. It is recommended to schedule all outdoor activities during nighttime and to remain inside your castle during daylight hours for crafting, building, and management.
The Weapon System: Every Weapon Offers Two Sets of Skills
The skill system of V Rising is composed of three layers: Weapon Skills, Spell Skills, and Ultimate Skills. Each weapon provides two unique Weapon Skills: the primary attack is universal across all weapons, the secondary skill unlocks on Copper-quality weapons and above, and the tertiary skill unlocks on Iron-quality weapons and above. The skill designs vary significantly between weapons — Swords provide Whirlwind and Shockwave (area clearing), Axes offer Frenzy and X-Slash (single-target burst), Maces deliver Crushing Blow and Smack (shield-breaking and stunning), Reapers provide Tendon Slice and Howling Reaper (crowd control), and Crossbows offer Rain of Arrows and Snipe (ranged precision strikes).
For new players, the Sword is the most accessible weapon. Whirlwind offers reliable area-clearing when surrounded by mobs, and Shockwave can deal considerable damage to elite enemies in close combat. As you gradually become familiar with the combat rhythm, you can experiment with dual-weapon approaches, such as using a Reaper for crowd control before switching to an Axe for single-target burst damage.
In boss fights, the rhythm of switching between weapon skills is more important than raw damage numbers. Take the mid-game boss Polora the Feywalker as an example — this boss frequently fires projectile barrages and summons elemental shields, requiring you to first use spells to break the shield before following up with weapon skills. Relying purely on basic attacks will yield almost no meaningful damage.

Early-Game Boss Kill Order: Gear Level Is the Only Standard
The equipment system of V Rising determines which enemies you can viably face. If your Gear Level is insufficient, your damage output and survivability will both fall short, and attempting to challenge a boss with a higher Gear Level is likely a waste of time. The following is a widely validated early-game kill order, progressing step by step according to Gear Level:
- After establishing your Castle Heart, head to the copper mining area to collect Copper Ore and defeat Boss Errol the Stonebreaker.
- After crafting Copper weapons, defeat the following in order: Alpha Wolf → Foreman Rufus → Keely the Frost Archer.
- Along the way, gather Grave Dust and Mourning Lilies to craft the Nightstalker Armour Set.
- Once your Gear Level reaches 30+, defeat Lidia the Chaos Archer → Grayson the Armourer → Clive the Firestarter, and collect Sulphur.
- Defeat Quincey the Bandit King to unlock Iron weapons, and defeat Nicholaus the Fallen to unlock the Study.
This is a standard speedrun route for the early game, completable within a few hours with proficient execution. New players can slow the pace to suit their own rhythm, but it is strongly recommended not to attempt bosses above your Gear Level.
Castle Building and Endgame Build Crafting
The Castle is the core domain of a vampire in V Rising. Building an efficient castle starts with site selection — it is recommended to choose a location near major thoroughfares in the Dunley Farmlands region, as this minimises travel distance for subsequent quests. For internal base layout, arrange all crafting stations in functional zones: a Smithing Zone (Furnace, Weapon Crafting Table), an Alchemy Zone (Potion Table, Enchanting Table), and a Tailoring Zone (Loom, Tailoring Bench).
The endgame goal is to craft a full set of Darksilver equipment (Gear Level up to 70), paired with Bloodmoon equipment (Gear Level up to 81), then push the Gear Level to 84 by unlocking the Blood Key Necklace, and finally obtain a 100% Blood Quality unique Soul Shard to reach the ultimate Gear Level of 85.
Regarding the route for acquiring endgame configurations, the bosses corresponding to key material unlocks include: Ugora the Spider Queen (unlocks Ghost Yarn and Silk), Jade the Vampire Hunter (unlocks Large Explosive Box and Primal Blood Essence), Foulrot the Soultaker (unlocks Spectral Dust), Mervyn the Elementalist (unlocks the Imperial Thread line), Wilfred the Werewolf Chieftain (unlocks Holy Resistance Potion), Azariel the Sunbringer (unlocks Gold Ingot), and Morian the Stormwing Matriarch (unlocks Flawless Gems).
Post-endgame objectives include capturing high-Blood-Quality servants for sustained resource output and seeking out 100% Blood Quality prisoners as an endgame blood reserve. For PvP players, gear builds need to incorporate more defensive stat rolls; PvE players can more aggressively stack offensive attributes. In the current 1.1 patch, the Throwing Daggers spell build performs particularly well in PvE — featuring zero melee exposure and three different scenario configurations, making it an excellent choice for players less comfortable with close-quarters combat.
Server Selection and New Player Settings
Before entering the game, choosing the right server mode is crucial. PvE mode (no player combat or castle sieging) is recommended for 1 to 4 players. PvP mode enables player combat, with inventory items dropping on death but equipment remaining. Full Loot PvP mode drops everything on death. PvP Duo mode restricts each clan to a maximum of two players.
New players are advised to start in PvE mode and to disable the “Teleport Bound Items” option in custom server settings. This setting is enabled by default and prevents you from using waygates while carrying certain specific items, which significantly increases travel time. Once disabled, waygates can be used normally to transport supplies, making the early-to-mid-game experience considerably smoother.
