“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty”

Developed by Team NINJA and published by Koei Tecmo, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty launched in March 2023 and received its third DLC, “Upheaval in Jingxiang,” in 2025, adding substantial endgame content. Set during the late Eastern Han Dynasty of China, this action RPG casts you as a militia soldier granted an undying body after being altered by an elixir, fighting through the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the Battle of Guandu against demonized historical figures. The game’s defining mechanic is the Deflect — an instantaneous action that fuses offense and defense, determining the entire rhythm and skill ceiling of combat.

Deflect: Your One Mandatory Lesson

Deflect is the single most important mechanic in Wo Long, bar none. By pressing the Deflect button at the exact moment an enemy attack is about to land, your character will use their weapon to parry the blow, gain Spirit (a substitute for consuming Spirit), and take zero damage. A successful Deflect leaves the enemy briefly staggered, during which a Spirit Attack (heavy attack) can deal massive damage and reduce the enemy’s Spirit gauge.

The most common mistake new players make is treating Deflect as a substitute for dodging. Deflect is not a dodge — its invincibility frames are shorter than a dodge, but the reward for success is far greater. Deflect can neutralize nearly all types of attacks, including physical strikes, elemental attacks, and projectiles. Only attacks where the enemy’s entire body glows red, known as Critical Blows, cannot be deflected and must be dodged.

The key to deflecting is rhythm, not raw reaction speed. Most enemies have clearly patterned attack rhythms. Observe how many hits are in their combo and the intervals between each strike, then mentally count the beat as you press the Deflect button. The best place to practice is at the second Battle Flag in the game’s prologue — there, a tiger-type enemy with a simple attack pattern and very long wind-up serves as an ideal training partner. Spending half an hour mastering deflects here will drastically lower the difficulty of every subsequent boss fight.

Do not spam the Deflect button. After each Deflect input, there is a brief cooldown window during which another press will register as invalid. When facing multi-hit combos, you must precisely press Deflect sequentially for each hit, rather than mashing the button and hoping to get lucky. Failed deflects are usually not because you pressed too late, but because you pressed too soon — during the cooldown window of the previous deflect.

The Morale System: Advantage Is Earned

The Morale system is the other core mechanic of Wo Long, directly dictating the offensive and defensive stats of both you and your enemies. Your Morale rank and the enemy’s are displayed above their respective health bars. The side with the higher Morale deals bonus damage to the lower-ranked side and receives reduced damage in return. Morale ranges from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 25.

Morale is raised in two ways: defeating enemies grants Morale points accumulated gradually during battle, or planting flags — finding and raising Battle Flags and Marking Flags throughout the map. Battle Flags serve as save points, and raising them permanently raises your Fortitude, the minimum Morale you can fall to. Marking Flags are non-save-point flags scattered through levels, offering smaller increases but appearing in greater numbers. Morale gained from defeating enemies can be partially lost upon death or after taking a heavy hit, but the minimum locked in by Battle Flags is never lost.

This means the correct progression rhythm for each level is: explore to find all flags, lock in your Fortitude, and then challenge the boss with high Morale. Rushing directly to the boss chamber means facing an enemy whose Morale may be ten or more ranks above yours — effectively adding a hard mode modifier for yourself. Conversely, clearing all flags before the boss is equivalent to applying a damage reduction buff — this is the normal difficulty the designers intended you to play at.

Five Phases Builds and Wizardry Spells

The character progression system is built on the Five PhasesWood (health and healing), Fire (attack and criticals), Earth (defense and guarding), Metal (status ailments and ranged), and Water (dodging and cost reduction). When levelling up, you allocate points into these five Virtues. Each Virtue not only enhances its corresponding attributes but also unlocks Wizardry Spells of that phase. The Five Phases operate on a cycle of mutual generation and mutual overcoming; when choosing your build, you must simultaneously consider your primary phase, the enemy types it overcomes, and those it is overcome by.

For new players, a Wood-Earth dual build is the safest starting choice. Wood provides healing Wizardry and additional health, while Earth offers damage reduction and passives that prevent guard from consuming Spirit. This combination does not yield the highest damage output, but its margin for error is exceptionally high — you can frequently use healing spells to restore health during combat while relying on Earth’s defense to mitigate the cost of failed deflects. Once you have mastered the deflect rhythm, you can switch to Fire or Water to chase a higher damage ceiling.

Wizardry Spells are divided into offensive, buff, and healing categories, and they consume Spirit when cast. Each spell requires a specific number of Wizardry Spell slots. You start with only two slots, and can upgrade your slot capacity by spending Wizardry Points in the spell menu. For the Wood-Earth build, the highest priority spell to unlock is the Wood spell Absorb Vitality — it allows you to consume Spirit during combat to restore a portion of your health, a skill whose value is irreplaceable throughout an entire first playthrough.

Full Boss Strategies: From Zhang Liang to Lu Bu

The game’s boss roster features demonized versions of famous Three Kingdoms generals. Below are the two encounters where new players most commonly struggle.

Zhang Liang is the first level’s boss and the game’s initial skill check. The first phase is a human-form fight. His attack rhythm is slow, making him an ideal target for practicing deflects. In the second phase, he transforms into a demon, his arm becoming a massive tentacle-like weapon. The attack range increases significantly, but his speed drops even further. The tentacle sweep in Zhang Liang’s second phase is the first major hurdle for new players — the timing for deflecting this attack is the moment the arm swings forward after pausing at its highest point, not the moment you see the arm rise. Be patient; wait until the arm is actually sweeping toward you before pressing deflect. Note: after defeating Zhang Liang, all equipment obtained during the prologue will be lost, so do not waste time farming gear.

Lu Bu is one of the most difficult bosses in the mid-game. Mounted on Red Hare, his attacks include charging thrusts, sweeping halberd strikes, and leaping ground slams. Lu Bu’s mounted charge attack cannot be deflected — when you see Red Hare lower its head and charge at you, do not attempt to deflect; you must dodge. His halberd sweep comes in two stages. The first can be deflected; the second is faster and has a very short deflect window. It is recommended to deflect the first sweep, follow up with a light attack, and then immediately dodge backward to evade the second.

After dismounting, Lu Bu enters his second form, wielding the Sky-Piercing Halberd in a rapid combo. His combo can extend up to five hits, but between the third and fourth hits, there is a pause slightly longer than the others — this is the best window to interrupt the combo. During this pause, use a Wizardry Spell counter or a heavy Spirit Attack to disrupt his sequence and create an opening for your own damage. Additionally, after Lu Bu’s leaping ground slam, he is locked into a recovery animation lasting approximately 1.5 seconds — this is the safest window to heal or use a healing spell. Never try to heal in the middle of his combo; he will prioritize attacking a character who is mid-animation using an item.
