“‌South of Midnight”14-Chapter Core Walkthrough

The game chapters vary in length, ranging from 15-20 minutes to several hours. Some chapters focus on plot development, while others emphasize combat and exploration, maintaining an overall balanced pace. The following outlines the core tasks, key actions, and tips for avoiding pitfalls in each chapter, skipping unnecessary plot and focusing on the essentials for success.

Chapter 1: Night of the Flood

Core Mission: Avoid the flood, find your mother, and escape.

① Trigger a cutscene in the protagonist’s room at the start, then go to the hall and interact with 3 items (such as the box on the central floor) to trigger a conversation with your mother;

② Go outside and find Bo and his dog in the last house on the right, then go to the last house on the left opposite and talk to Mrs. Pearl;

③ After the conversation, your mother and house are swept away by the flood. Run along the riverbank in pursuit, being careful to avoid falling objects;

④ Cross the broken bridge (climb the white beams) to reach the Flood Mansion;

⑤ After meeting your grandmother, enter the magical space and unlock your first ability, “Guiding Threads.” Follow the threads until you wake up, interact with the note on the dressing table, and escape the mansion from the balcony to complete the chapter.

Tips for Avoiding Pitfalls: Do not stop while running, as falling objects will continuously cause damage; climbing can only be done on white marked objects, do not jump blindly.

Chapter 2: Other Voices, Other Loom

Core Mission: Familiarize yourself with the weaving ability and advance the plot. ① This chapter focuses on narrative and instruction, guiding you through the environment by following the guide threads and learning basic skills.

② In simple battles, practice the “attack + dismantle” sequence to familiarize yourself with the controls.

③ Key milestone: Find the hidden loom to trigger the story, unlock more weaving-related settings, and progress to the end of the chapter to complete the mission.

Tips to avoid: There are no mandatory collectibles in this chapter. Focus on familiarizing yourself with the weaving skill’s cooldown mechanism to prepare for later battles.

Chapter 3: A Big Fish

Core mission: Explore the swamp area, dealing with environmental puzzles and basic combat.

① This chapter is primarily set in a swamp. Use the guide threads to avoid swamp traps and jump to safe platforms.

② When encountering small groups of evil spirits, switch to Breadcrumbs to turn some enemies into allies, prioritizing dismantling low-health enemies to restore health.

③ Key milestone: Find the shipwreck in the swamp, interact to trigger the story, learn about local folklore, and progress to the end of the chapter after completing the exploration.

Tips to avoid: Visibility is poor in the swamp area, so pay attention to the guide threads to avoid falling into traps. After switching to Breadcrumbs, switch back to Hazel immediately to avoid being surrounded by enemies. Chapter 4: Wicked Temper

Core Mission: Unlock more weaving skills and clear area anomalies. ① This chapter unlocks the “Thread Push/Pull” skill, which can be used to move objects in the environment, trigger mechanisms, and interrupt enemy attacks in combat; ② Environmental puzzles will be encountered during exploration, requiring the use of thread push/pull to adjust object positions and clear paths forward; ③ Combat difficulty is slightly increased; it is recommended to prioritize unlocking the “Precise Dodge Triggers Area Explosion” skill to reduce combat pressure; ④ Key Node: Clear all evil spirits in the area, dismantle the core anomaly node, and complete the chapter after triggering the cutscene.

Chapter 5: Everything That Rises

Core Mission: Defeat the first key boss (Two-Toed Tom) and advance the main storyline. ① The core of this chapter is the BOSS battle. The BOSS’s main attack methods are charging, claw attacks, and stone throwing.

② BOSS battle tips: Maintain distance and stay close to the fence to avoid claw attacks; when the BOSS charges, wait for the dodge window and dodge in time; when the BOSS dives underwater to throw stones, go to the center of the area; when the BOSS leaps out from a distance, dodge to the southwest.

③ After defeating the BOSS, a cutscene will trigger, unlocking a new weaving skill and completing the chapter.

Achievements: Defeating Two-Toed Tom unlocks the “Crocodile Tamer” achievement; defeating him without taking damage unlocks the “Crocodile Master” achievement. If you are hit, you can exit the menu and load a recent save to challenge again.

Chapter 6: Hush, Hush, Sweet Cherie

Core mission: Explore the abandoned town and collect clues to the legend.

① This chapter is set in a dilapidated town, focusing on exploration and plot development. You can collect scattered documents to learn about local folklore.

② There is less combat; the main focus is on environmental interaction and platforming.

③ Key milestone: Find the church in the town center, interact with it to trigger a cutscene, uncover some family secrets, and advance to the end of the chapter.

Chapter 7: A Barman is Hard to Find

Core Mission: Defeat the BOSS (Rougarou) and find clues about the bartender.

① BOSS Battle Core: The boss attacks rapidly and releases mist. Use weaving and thread-pulling skills to interrupt its attacks.

② Combat Tips: Maintain distance and dodge immediately after each two-attack combo. When the mist appears and the ground turns red, move left or right, then dodge twice in the opposite direction.

③ After defeating the BOSS, unlock the “Owl Greeting” achievement. Defeating it without taking damage unlocks the “Owl for Owl” achievement.

④ Explore the bar area, find clues related to the bartender, and complete the chapter after triggering the cutscene.

Chapter 8: Their Eyes Were Watching

Core Mission: Explore deep into the forest and confront swarms of evil spirits. ① Visibility is limited in this chapter; use guiding threads to locate targets.

② The number of evil spirits has increased; it is recommended to prioritize using breadcrumbs to transform enemies and use precise dodges to clear swarms.

③ Key point: Find the altar deep in the forest, interact with it to trigger the plot, learn more about the secrets of the “Weavers,” and advance the chapter after completing the exploration.

Tips to avoid pitfalls: There are many hidden paths in the forest; you can explore them appropriately to collect pom-poms and documents, but there is no need to linger too long to avoid wasting time.

Chapter 9: Light in the Darkness

Core objective: Defeat the BOSS (Huggin’ Molly) to unlock key skills. ① The BOSS is in spider form, primarily attacking with punches and area-of-effect (AOE) attacks, and includes parkour elements throughout the battle; ② Combat Tips: Run counter-clockwise around the BOSS, prioritizing dodging to the east; if running clockwise, dodge to the southwest; during parkour, remember the attack points and stop early to avoid damage; ③ Defeating the BOSS unlocks the “Arachnophobia” achievement, while defeating it without taking damage unlocks the “Spider Lover” achievement; ④ Unlocks the Advanced Weaving skill, which can be used to solve subsequent complex mechanisms and complete chapters.

Chapters 10-12: Light in the Dark, Muddy Waters, Crossroads

Core Mission: Connect story clues, clear area anomalies, and unlock ultimate skills. ① These three chapters focus on exploration and plot progression, with scenes encompassing caves, muddy areas, and crossroads. Players must utilize all previously unlocked skills to solve puzzles (thread pushing and pulling, breadcrumb cooperation, advanced weaving); ② Combat difficulty is moderate, primarily consisting of swarms of evil spirits and elite monsters. A combination of “precise dodging + weaving skills” can be used for damage output, prioritizing the elimination of elite monsters; ③ Key milestones: Collect enough legendary clues to uncover the family’s hidden secrets, unlock the ultimate weaving skill, and pave the way for the final battle; ④ Tips for avoiding pitfalls: Movement speed is slowed in muddy areas, so be careful to dodge enemy attacks; at crossroads, choose the correct direction, which can be confirmed using guiding threads.

Chapter 13: The Past Is Not

Past Core objective: Explore hidden areas, collect key collectibles, and trigger the final chapter’s storyline. ① This chapter has two core collectibles, both of which are essential: 1. After the first chase scene, enter a new area, turn right and you’ll see a large painting on the wall. To the right of the painting is a small room, and on the workbench to the left of the room is a note (Collectible 1: Run, Rabbit, Run); 2. After the second chase scene, enter another stage area. The second collectible is on the central table (Collectible 2: Eternally She Waits); ② Clear out the remaining evil spirits in the area, interact with key items, trigger the plot, uncover the truth behind the protagonist’s mother’s disappearance, and advance to the final chapter.

Chapter 14: Midnight

Core Mission: Final Battle, complete the main storyline. ① Before the final battle, it is recommended to upgrade all practical skills and prepare sufficient recovery items (which can be obtained by dismantling enemies); ② Final BOSS battle process: The BOSS will release a full-screen AOE and life-steal skill. You need to use the ultimate weaving skill to interrupt its life-steal and use precise dodging to avoid AOE damage; the battle is divided into two phases. The first phase focuses on positioning and dodging, and the second phase focuses on attacking weaknesses; ③ After defeating the BOSS, the ending story will be triggered, the main story will be completed, and the “Midnight” achievement will be unlocked (after completing the game); ④ After the ending, you can go back through the chapter selection to complete the unfinished collections and side quests.
