On June 1, 2026, Kojima Productions issued a brief but weighty announcement via its official social media channels: the studio‘s in-development tactical espionage action title, Physint, has been confirmed for release on Xbox Series X|S and PC, launching simultaneously with the PlayStation 5 version. This news shatters the industry-wide expectation of PlayStation exclusivity that had persisted since the project’s initial unveiling in 2023, and marks the first time since Kojima Productions’ founding as an independent entity in 2015 that a major title from the studio will debut across multiple platforms on day one.
Physint was first revealed during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase. At the time, Hideo Kojima appeared on stage alongside Hermen Hulst, then head of PlayStation Studios, to announce the project, positioning it as a “next-generation tactical espionage action title” that would blend cinematic storytelling with high-freedom stealth gameplay. Over the following two-plus years, the studio disclosed remarkably little. It was confirmed that the game would run on an upgraded version of the Decima Engine, that Hollywood actors Elle Fanning and Nicolas Cage would play major roles, and that the narrative would explore themes of “information warfare” and “digital identity.” Precisely because so little had been shared, the confirmation of a multiplatform simultaneous launch in June 2026 caught nearly the entire industry off guard.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the original agreement between PlayStation and Kojima Productions did include an exclusivity window of at least 12 months. However, this clause was renegotiated in late 2025. Two core factors drove the change. First, Kojima Productions itself sought to broaden the audience reach for its titles. The studio has grown from roughly 80 employees at its founding to over 250, significantly increasing operational costs; relying on a single platform‘s user base made it difficult to meet the project’s return-on-investment expectations. Second, Microsoft demonstrated strong interest in Physint and offered highly attractive commercial terms for a potential Game Pass deal. As of now, however, whether Physint will join the Game Pass day-one lineup remains undecided, with negotiations between the studio and platform holders still ongoing.
On the same day the multiplatform announcement was made, Hideo Kojima posted a brief, evocative message on his personal social media account: “Snakes have no borders. Spies don‘t either.” The post garnered over 200,000 likes within hours and was widely interpreted as a subtle commentary on the end of the platform-exclusivity era. It is worth noting that Kojima Productions has already tested the long-tail sales potential of PC through Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The PC version of the former sold over six million copies within two years of its release — a figure that far exceeded expectations for a title originally launched as a PlayStation exclusive. That experience undoubtedly influenced the platform strategy for Physint.
For Xbox players, the arrival of Physint fills a longstanding void in the platform’s catalogue for high-quality tactical espionage titles. Since the Splinter Cell series went dormant, this particular sub-genre has existed in a near vacuum within the Xbox ecosystem. For PlayStation, while it has lost exclusivity, Sony appears to have no intention of loosening its deep ties with Kojima Productions. Multiple insiders have indicated that there are still unannounced projects in development between the two parties.
Physint is currently targeting a 2027 release window. No specific date has been set, but Kojima Productions has confirmed that the first full gameplay trailer will be unveiled at The Game Awards later in 2026.
