On July 18, 2026, Capcom officially unveiled “The Endless Sands,” the first major paid expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, during a special summer broadcast. The expansion will launch on November 6, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, priced at $39.99. The expansion introduces a brand-new open region, six new large monsters, a fourteenth weapon type called the “Wyrm Lance,” and an entirely new endgame loop mechanic known as “Elder Dragon Tides.”
The centerpiece of “The Endless Sands” is an entirely new region called the “Silent Dunes.” This is an expanse of ancient civilization ruins surrounded by sandstorms, comparable in size to the “Scarlet Forest” from the base game. The terrain of the Silent Dunes will undergo dramatic changes over time — at regular intervals, a massive sandstorm will sweep across the entire map, completely reshaping the terrain, burying existing pathways, and exposing new ruin entrances and monster lairs. Capcom demonstrated this system during the stream: after a sandstorm passed, a previously inaccessible pyramid structure rose from beneath the dunes, and hunters had to enter and explore its interior before it was buried once again.
Six new monsters will arrive alongside the Silent Dunes. They include the flagship Elder Dragon “Apophis,” a colossal serpentine creature dwelling deep within the sands. Its attacks include creating quicksand vortexes, spewing corrosive dust, and coiling around hunters to crush them. There is also a Fanged Wyvern called “Armor Sand Wyvern,” which can coat itself in sand hardened by its own saliva to form a tough shell, dynamically altering its own elemental weaknesses. Additionally, a new Brute Wyvern known as the “Desert Stalker” has been revealed, an extremely fast predator that uses sandstorm cover to launch ambushes. The trailer also hinted at a “colossal Elder Dragon” of immense size that will require coordinated effort from multiple hunters, though Capcom did not disclose its name during this broadcast.
The fourteenth weapon, the “Wyrm Lance,” is one of the expansion’s biggest surprises. This is a throwable, mid-range thrusting weapon that features both melee and ranged modes. In melee mode, the Wyrm Lance delivers rapid thrusting combos and a charged lunge. In ranged mode, hunters can hurl the lance; upon striking, the head embeds itself in the monster and continuously inflicts “Rending” damage. The hunter can then recall the lance after a few seconds or actively dash to the point of impact to follow up with a melee assault. Capcom’s demonstration showcased a full combo: using the Wyrm Lance’s ranged throw to ground a flying wyvern by striking its wing, then dashing to the impact point to deliver a flurry of thrusting attacks for burst damage on the downed monster.
The endgame loop mechanic, “Elder Dragon Tides,” is another cornerstone of the expansion. After hunters defeat Apophis and unlock Master Rank, the Silent Dunes region will periodically trigger “Elder Dragon Tides” events — sandstorms in which multiple high-difficulty monsters, including strengthened versions of past Elder Dragons, appear simultaneously. Successfully hunting all targets in an event rewards hunters with a new resource called “Tide Essence,” which is used to craft and upgrade the expansion’s most powerful weapons and armor. Capcom stated that the difficulty of Elder Dragon Tides will dynamically scale based on the gear levels of participating hunters, ensuring that players at various stages of progression will find a reasonable challenge and appropriate rewards.
At the close of the broadcast, Capcom confirmed that “The Endless Sands” will continue Monster Hunter Wilds‘ strategy of free post-launch updates. After the expansion launches, the studio plans to add additional monsters, event quests, and collaboration content through multiple free updates, with a detailed roadmap to be revealed before launch. For players who have not yet purchased the base game, Capcom will release a complete bundle containing Monster Hunter Wilds and “The Endless Sands” expansion, priced at $69.99.
